AI Search Optimization: Ten Things You Need for a Successful Website in 2026

Your website may be the first place a potential customer learns about your business. But getting someone to your website is only part of the challenge.

Today, customers might discover your business through Google, Google Maps, social media, an AI-powered search tool, or a recommendation from a friend. They may visit your website to compare services, check your service area, read about your expertise, or decide whether to contact you.

That means a successful website needs to do more than look professional.

It needs to help customers find you, understand what you offer, trust your business, and take the next step.

It also needs to make sense to the search engines and AI systems that increasingly influence how customers discover local businesses.

That’s where AI search optimization comes in.

AI search optimization builds on the fundamentals of SEO while helping make your website’s information clear, useful, and understandable across newer AI-powered search experiences. For small businesses, the goal isn’t to build a website for AI instead of people. It’s to build a website that works for both.

1. Clear Information About Your Business

Start with the basics.

Someone visiting your website should immediately understand:

• What your business does
• What services or products you offer
• Who you serve
• Where you serve
• How to contact you

This sounds simple, but many small business websites make visitors work too hard for basic information.

For example, a homeowner searching for an HVAC company shouldn’t have to dig through multiple pages to determine whether a business provides AC repair in their area.

Your website should answer those questions clearly and naturally.

This also matters for AI search optimization. AI-powered search tools need accurate information about your business to understand what you do and when you may be relevant to a customer’s question.

2. Dedicated Service Pages

If you offer multiple services, don’t try to explain everything on one generic Services page.

Give important services their own pages.

A plumber, for example, might have separate pages for:

• Water heater repair
• Drain cleaning
• Emergency plumbing
• Sewer line repair
• Bathroom plumbing

Dedicated pages give you more room to explain what each service includes, who it’s for, what customers can expect, and how to get started.

They also create more opportunities to appear when someone searches for a specific service.

This is an important part of both SEO and AI search optimization. The more clearly your website communicates your areas of expertise, the easier it can be for search systems to understand where your business fits.

3. Location Information

For local businesses, where you work matters almost as much as what you do.

Customers often search for businesses using combinations such as:

• “plumber near me”
• “roof repair in [city]”
• “HVAC company serving [area]”
• “best landscaping company near [neighborhood]”

Your website should clearly communicate your service area.

That could include your primary location, surrounding communities, and dedicated location pages when they provide genuinely useful information.

Avoid creating pages that simply swap one city name for another. Instead, make location content useful by explaining the areas you actually serve and the services customers can find there.

Location information also gives AI-powered search systems additional context when determining which businesses may be relevant to local questions.

4. Helpful Answers to Customer Questions

Customers have questions before they buy.

How much does the service cost?

How long does it take?

Do you offer emergency appointments?

Do you serve my area?

What should I do before you arrive?

Can I schedule online?

Your website should answer these questions before customers have to call or search somewhere else.

FAQs are one practical way to do this. You can include relevant questions on individual service pages as well as a broader FAQ section.

Clear answers can improve the customer experience while giving search engines and AI systems additional information about your business.

Thryv Professional Websites, for example, include FAQs on service pages along with a dedicated FAQ page.

5. AI Search Optimization

Traditional SEO still matters. But the way customers search is expanding.

Someone might type a keyword into Google. They might ask a conversational question in an AI search tool. They might use voice search or ask an AI assistant to recommend a local business.

Your website needs to provide information that works across those experiences.

AI search optimization focuses on making your business information easier for AI-powered systems to understand and use.

That starts with the fundamentals:

• Clear, helpful content
• Logical website structure
• Descriptive service pages
• Accurate business information
• Helpful FAQs
• Consistent terminology
• Structured data and schema where appropriate

The goal isn’t to stuff your website with keywords or write robotic content.

It’s to clearly explain who you are, what you do, where you work, and why customers should choose you.

As Thryv’s recent guidance on AI search optimization explains, consistency across your website, listings, social profiles, and other trusted sources is an important part of building stronger AI visibility.

6. A Mobile-Friendly Experience

Your customers aren’t always sitting at a computer when they find your business.

They may be searching from their phone while standing in a store, driving home, dealing with a plumbing emergency or comparing businesses from the couch.

Your website should be easy to use on a smaller screen.

That means:

• Text should be easy to read.
• Buttons should be easy to tap.
• Navigation should be simple.
• Forms shouldn’t be unnecessarily complicated.
• Important information shouldn’t be buried.
• Pages should load quickly.

A website that looks great on a desktop but is frustrating to use on a phone can quickly turn a potential customer away.

7. Trust Signals

Finding your business is one thing. Trusting it is another.

Before contacting you, customers may want to know whether other people have had a good experience.

Your website can reinforce that confidence with trust signals such as:

• Customer reviews
• Testimonials
• Case studies
• Certifications
• Awards
• Associations
• Years in business
• Photos of your work
• Team information

Don’t make these claims bigger than they are. Authenticity matters.

Your website should give potential customers a realistic picture of who you are and what they can expect.

Reviews can be particularly useful because they provide firsthand context about customer experiences. They can also complement the information customers find elsewhere online.

8. Strong Calls to Action

Getting someone to visit your website isn’t the finish line.

What do you want them to do next?

A successful website makes that answer obvious.

Depending on your business, your primary call to action might be:

Call now.

Book an appointment.

Request a quote.

Schedule a consultation.

Get started.

Make those actions easy to find throughout the website.

For local service businesses, click-to-call functionality can be especially useful. Forms, appointment links, and other conversion tools can also help turn website visitors into real opportunities.

Thryv Professional Websites are designed with conversion-focused features such as mobile-responsive design, click-to-call functionality, and form integrations.

9. Professional Design and Useful Content

Your website doesn’t need to win a design award.

It needs to make your business look credible and make it easy for customers to find what they need.

That means your design and content should work together.

Use professional images where they add value. Organize pages logically. Break up large blocks of text. Make important information easy to scan.

And don’t overlook your copy.

Generic website language like “We are committed to providing exceptional service” doesn’t tell customers much.

Instead, explain what makes your business useful.

For example:

• What types of customers do you serve?
• What problems do you solve?
• What services do you specialize in?
• What areas do you cover?
• What can customers expect when they contact you?

The more specific your content is, the more useful it becomes to both customers and search systems.

10. Room to Grow

Your website shouldn’t only work for your business today.

It should have room to grow with you.

Maybe you add a new service next year. Maybe you expand into another city. Maybe you start serving commercial customers in addition to residential ones.

A website with a flexible structure can make those changes easier.

This is one reason page count shouldn’t be the only measure of a successful website. What matters is whether you have enough useful content to accurately represent your business.

Thryv Professional Websites can include up to 30 pages of personalized content, giving businesses room to build out services, locations, and other information based on their needs.

And if you’re not interested in building and maintaining the entire site yourself, Thryv’s Professional Websites offer a more hands-off approach. A dedicated Thryv designer builds and launches the website, with professional copywriting and ongoing updates and support.

These 10 elements aren’t separate tasks.

They work together.

Your service pages explain what you do.

Your location pages explain where you work.

Your FAQs answer customer questions.

Your reviews and testimonials build trust.

Your calls to action make it easy to contact you.

Your mobile-friendly design creates a better experience.

And AI search optimization helps make that information easier for AI-powered search systems to understand.

That’s important because customers don’t always follow a straight path from search result to website to purchase.

Someone might discover your business through an AI recommendation, visit your website to verify the recommendation, check your reviews and then call you.

Your website needs to support that entire journey.

A successful website isn’t simply an online brochure.

It’s a place where customers can learn about your business, get answers, build confidence, and take action.

And as search continues to evolve, your website also needs to communicate clearly with the systems helping customers discover businesses in the first place.

That’s why AI search optimization should be part of your website strategy, not an afterthought.

The good news is that you don’t have to rebuild everything around every new change in search.

Start with the fundamentals: clear information, helpful content, strong service pages, accurate locations, trustworthy proof, and an easy path to contact you.

Then build from there.

That’s the approach behind the relaunched Thryv Professional Websites, which combine professional design with SEO and AEO foundations, customer-focused content and features designed to help businesses get found and turn website visits into opportunities.

Because your website shouldn’t just tell people that your business exists.

It should help the right customers find you, choose you, and take the next step.
