“Near Me” Searches: Still One of the Biggest Opportunities for Local Businesses

Someone in your area needs exactly what your business offers. They search “plumber near me,” “salon near me,” or “lawyer near me” and start comparing their options. According to BrightLocal’s 2026 consumer research, 72% of consumers look at three or fewer businesses before making a decision. If yours doesn’t make that short list, the call may go to a competitor.

That’s why near me SEO matters. These searches often come from people ready to call, book, or visit a local business. Showing up at the right moment gives your business more opportunities to earn calls, appointments and leads.

Google needs clear information about what you do, where you serve, and whether customers trust your business. Your Google Business Profile, online listings, reviews, and local website content all contribute to that picture.

A pipe starts leaking at 7 p.m. The homeowner probably isn’t spending the evening researching plumbing companies. They search “plumber near me,” compare a few nearby options, and call the one that looks like the best fit.

The same thing happens when someone needs an appointment at a salon this week or wants to speak with a local attorney. If your business doesn’t appear, you may never know that lead was available.

Strong visibility gives you more chances to turn nearby searches into calls, appointments, and booked work. Understanding how local search works can help you see why some businesses appear when nearby customers are ready to choose.

Google says local results are mainly based on three factors: relevance, distance, and prominence. Knowing how they work helps you focus on the factors you can improve instead of spending time trying to influence things you can’t control.

Relevance

Relevance is how closely your business matches the search. If someone searches “emergency HVAC repair near me,” Google needs enough information to recognize that you provide that service. Keep your Google Business Profile current, especially your category, services, and hours, and make those same services easy to understand on your website.

Distance

Distance considers how far your business is from the person searching. When a search doesn’t name a location, Google can use available location information to determine what’s nearby. SEO can’t change that physical distance, but accurate location or service-area information helps Google understand where your business operates.

Prominence

Prominence is Google’s way of looking for signs that your business is established and trusted online. Reviews, links from other websites, and information about your business across the web can all contribute, and Google says review count and positive ratings can help local ranking.

A strong review profile can also make your business easier for customers to choose once they find you.

How to Rank For “Near Me” Searches (Without Keyword Stuffing)

A strong near me SEO strategy starts with the local signals you can control. If you’re wondering how to optimize for near me searches, get your Google Business Profile and listings in order first, then focus on reviews and useful local website content. Keep your site easy to use and track whether that visibility is producing calls, appointments, or jobs.

Optimize Your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile may be one of the first things a nearby customer sees. An incorrect phone number, old hours, or missing service can cost you a call before someone reaches your website.

Review your profile and check:

• Primary business category and services
• Address or service areas
• Phone number, website, and hours
• Recent photos
• Changes to services or availability

Say a roofing company starts serving two neighboring towns. Updating its service areas gives Google clearer information about where the company operates and helps homeowners quickly see whether they’re within its coverage.

Revisit the profile whenever something important changes and give it a quick check at least monthly.

Keep Your Name, Address, and Phone Consistent Everywhere

Customers may find your information through Google, maps, and online directories. If one listing has an old phone number, address, or business hours, a customer ready to call could hit a dead end.

Check that your business name, address, and phone number match across the places customers find you.

Updating directories one at a time can become tedious, especially for a growing or multi-location business. Business listings management software can help when you want control without making every update manually. Thryv lets you manage your business information from one place and distribute updates across supported listings. That reduces the chances that a customer will find outdated information when they’re ready to contact you.

Use Location Naturally in Your Content

Describe where you work the way you’d explain it to a customer. An HVAC company might say it offers “AC repair and replacement in Stamford, Greenwich, and surrounding Fairfield County communities,” while a salon could name the neighborhood where it’s located and nearby communities it regularly serves.

Include relevant locations on the service, contact, and About pages to help customers determine whether you can serve them.

Build Location-Focused Pages

If you actively serve multiple communities, a useful location page can answer questions specific to customers there.

For example, an accounting firm with offices in White Plains and Stamford could create separate pages explaining the services, contact information and office details for each location. A landscaper serving several towns could create a page for each key service area, listing the services available there, examples of recent local projects, and an easy way to request an estimate.

Each page should provide customers with useful information about working with you in that location, including available services, local experience, and the next step to contact you.

Earn and Respond to Reviews

Reviews can influence whether customers trust the businesses they find in local results. Someone looking for a new dentist might find two nearby practices that offer the service they need. If one has a steady stream of recent reviews describing positive experiences and the other has few recent reviews, that extra proof can shape which practice gets the appointment.

Ask satisfied customers for reviews while the experience is still fresh. After a dental appointment or completed service job, for example, a review request can go out soon after the visit instead of relying on someone to remember later.

If review follow-up repeatedly gets forgotten, reputation management software for small businesses can take some of that work off your plate. Thryv can help send review requests, while AI Review Response drafts personalized replies for you to review and publish. That makes it easier to keep your review activity current during a busy week without writing every response from scratch.

Make Sure Your Site is Fast and Mobile-Friendly

Someone searching from a phone may be ready to call or book right away. Open your own site on mobile and see how quickly you can find a service, confirm the location, and contact the business. If the phone number, booking option, or quote request is hard to find, fix that path before spending time on smaller website improvements.

Track Which Searches Turn Into Leads

Rankings tell you where you appear. Calls, quote requests, and booked appointments or jobs tell you whether that visibility is helping the business and which services or locations are producing real opportunities.

Follow how many of those leads turn into paying customers. If a location page gets steady traffic but few calls or bookings, the page may need a clearer service description or next step.

If listings, reviews, content, and search work repeatedly fall behind, Thryv Search Boosts gives you expert-managed SEO and AEO support to strengthen your visibility across traditional and AI-powered search. You can keep your attention on customers while specialists manage the ongoing search work.

No. You generally don’t need to put “near me” throughout your website. Google can use a person’s location along with information about your business to find relevant nearby options.

Give customers and search engines more useful information by naming your actual services and the locations you serve.

For example:

Avoid: “Looking for an HVAC company near me? We’re the best HVAC company near me for HVAC repair near me.”

Better: “AC repair for homeowners in Stamford, Greenwich, and surrounding Fairfield County communities.”

The second version says exactly what the business offers and where it works. If “near me” fits naturally somewhere, you can use it, but there’s no need to build pages around repeating the phrase.

For broader website improvements, these SEO fundamentals for small businesses can help you make your services and expertise easier to understand.

Yes. Eligible businesses that travel to customers can appear in near me searches without operating a storefront where customers visit.

Set up your Google Business Profile to reflect the areas you actually serve and follow Google’s requirements for displaying or hiding your address. Your website should reinforce those areas on the service and location pages customers use to decide whether you work in their community.

For example, a mobile pet groomer serving Danbury, Ridgefield, and Bethel, Connecticut could name those communities on its service pages and explain which appointments are available in each area. That gives customers useful information when deciding whether the business comes to them.

Distance still affects local results, so expanding the service area settings in your profile doesn’t guarantee visibility across every location. Focus on places where you genuinely do business and support that presence with useful local information and customer reviews.

Clear information about your services and location helps Google understand your business and provides AI-powered search tools with useful context about what you offer and where you operate. Answer engine optimization (AEO) focuses on making that information easy for AI-powered search and answer tools to understand and use.

• Keep your business information up to date across key profiles and listings.
• Answer real customer questions clearly. A family law firm might explain which cases it handles, where its offices are located, and how someone can request a consultation.
• Build trust beyond your website. Genuine customer reviews and relevant mentions from trusted local or industry websites give search tools more information about your business.

Clear, consistent information can make your business easier for search and AI systems to understand, although no tactic can guarantee that a particular tool will include or recommend you.

If keeping up with SEO and AEO takes more time or expertise than you have available, Thryv’s SEO and AEO services give you expert help strengthening your visibility across traditional and AI-powered search.

Getting found gives you the opportunity, but the customer still needs an easy way to choose you and take the next step. A homeowner searching “roofer near me” might find your listing, read recent reviews, and request an estimate. If that request arrives while the roofer is on a ladder, waiting several hours to respond could give another company time to win the job.

Thryv AI Lead Flow™ can help keep new leads moving with automated follow-up until you’re ready to step in. That gives high-intent prospects a faster response while they’re still deciding who to hire.

Get found → Make the choice easy → Follow up quickly

You can manage listings and reviews yourself with Thryv’s software, use done-for-you marketing support when ongoing search work becomes too much to manage, or combine both as your business grows.
