SEO vs. AEO vs. GEO: What Small Businesses Need to Know to Win in Local Search Today

In 2026, 45% of consumers used AI tools to find local business recommendations, up from just 6% the year before. That’s a major jump in twelve months, and it happened while most small-business owners were busy running their businesses.

Now you’re being told you need SEO, AEO, and GEO to keep up. Three acronyms. Three supposed strategies. One more thing to figure out on top of everything already on your plate.

The reality is simpler than that. Instead of three separate projects competing for your time and budget, they’re three ways customers can find and judge your business. And they all depend on a clear website, accurate business details, real reviews, and a consistent presence across the web.

Search Engine Optimization helps you rank in Google. AEO helps you show up in direct answers, voice search results, and conversational content that answers a question outright. GEO focuses on improving how your business is represented in generative AI responses. The result each one produces is different, but the signals feeding it are the same.

This guide explains what each term actually means, where they overlap, and what your business should do now to get found across Google and AI search. You’ll finish with one action plan instead of three, and a clear sense of what deserves your attention first.

A few years ago, a customer looking for a plumber typed a few words into Google and scanned a page of blue links. They clicked two or three, compared what they found, and picked one to call. The search engine handed over a list, and the customer did the sorting.

Today that same customer might never see a list. They ask a full question out loud, read a summary Google writes at the top of the page, or type their problem into ChatGPT and get back one or two business names. The sorting happens before they ever see a result.

That changes the search experience. Instead of opening several websites and comparing businesses themselves, customers may get a summarized answer or recommendation upfront. Google AI Overviews now appear on more than 20% of searches, and when they appear, click-through to traditional results drops by roughly 60%.

Local discovery is spread across traditional Google results, the local map pack, AI-generated overviews, voice assistants, and standalone AI tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Perplexity AI.

But search engines and AI tools still need to answer the same basic questions. What does your business offer? Where does it operate? Is its information accurate? Do customers trust it?

That is why the fundamentals of local search and local SEO for small businesses, meaning clear content, accurate business information, useful answers, and strong trust signals, are still relevant. They help customers find and evaluate your business, regardless of how the results are delivered.

Local Search vs. Local SEO

	Local Search	Local SEO
What it is	How customers find nearby businesses, products and services	The steps a business takes to improve its visibility in local search results
Example	A customer searches “plumber near me”	A plumber optimizes its Google Business Profile, website, listings and reviews
Goal	Find the right nearby business	Make your business easier for nearby customers to find and choose

SEO, AEO, and GEO describe different ways your business can earn visibility as people search for information. SEO focuses on traditional search rankings, AEO on direct answers, and GEO on generative AI responses and recommendations.

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) helps your business appear prominently in traditional search results when people look for the products or services you offer. For a local business, that could mean showing up when someone searches for “roof repair near me” or “family lawyer in Dallas.”

Search engines consider signals such as the relevance and quality of your website content, your business information, reviews, links, and local presence when deciding which results to show. Strong local SEO tactics also help you appear in the local map result customers see before they ever reach a website.

What this means for your business: Strong SEO makes it easier for search engines to understand what you do, where you operate, and when your business is relevant to a customer’s search.

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) helps your content get selected when a search platform provides a direct answer to a question. These answers can appear in featured snippets, AI Overviews, and voice search responses from assistants like Google Assistant, along with other experiences where users receive information without browsing a full list of links. Voice search queries tend to be longer and more conversational, so plain answers to real questions matter here.

AEO depends heavily on clear, useful content that directly addresses the questions customers ask. Matching real search intent, along with accurate business details and well-organized information, makes it easier for answer engines to retrieve the right information.

What this means for your business: Answer common customer questions clearly so search platforms can confidently surface your information when those questions come up.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), sometimes called artificial intelligence optimization, focuses on visibility within AI tools that generate responses using information gathered from multiple sources. That includes AI answer engines like ChatGPT Search and Microsoft Copilot that might summarize your business, cite your content, compare you with other options, or recommend your services.

These systems need enough reliable information to understand who your business serves, what you offer, and whether your business is a credible option. Your website, listings, reviews, and mentions across the web can all contribute to that picture.

What this means for your business: Make sure information about your business is clear, consistent, and trustworthy wherever AI search technology may encounter it.

SEO, AEO, and GEO lead to different types of visibility, but there’s significant overlap in what supports them: useful content, accurate business information, strong reviews, and trust across the web. Strengthening those fundamentals gives your business a better chance of appearing wherever customers choose to search.

What you publish on your website is only part of what search systems can learn about your business. They may also encounter your hours and service information in local listings, see what customers say in reviews, or find your business referenced elsewhere online.

When those sources tell a consistent story, there’s less ambiguity about who you are and what you offer.

The emphasis shifts depending on where a customer is searching. Here’s how that changes what visibility looks like across SEO, AEO, and GEO:

Comparing SEO vs. AEO vs. GEO

	SEO	AEO	GEO
Goal	Rank prominently for relevant searches	Be selected as a direct answer	Be understood, cited, or recommended by generative AI
Where you appear	Search results and local results	Direct answers, featured snippets, voice results, and AI search	Generative AI responses, AI citations, and recommendations
One thing to get right	Make your website relevant and authoritative	Answer customer questions clearly and directly	Build a clear, consistent, credible presence across the web

You don’t need to manage any of this by hand, but it helps to know what search systems actually read. On your website, elements such as structured data, schema markup, and descriptive metadata can give search engines additional context about a page and its content. They don’t guarantee enhanced search visibility, but they can make your information easier for search systems to interpret.

The same clarity also helps across newer search experiences. Generative AI systems may draw on websites, search indexes, business listings, and other publicly available sources when constructing responses. Clear, consistent information gives those systems stronger context about what your business does, where it operates, and whether it may be relevant to a user’s question.

Your website is one part of that presence. Business profiles, customer reviews, and mentions on reputable sources can also help search systems understand and validate information about your business. Keeping details such as your name, location, hours, and services consistent through online listings management gives those systems more reliable information to work with.

That is why local businesses need a strong SEO foundation that extends beyond their website. The same qualities associated with strong search content — experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trust — can also make your business information more useful and credible across newer search experiences.

You need one set of habits, kept up over time, that make your business clear, accurate, and trusted wherever a customer looks for you. Strengthen how your business is understood across AI-powered search experiences. Here are the four things worth your attention.

Note: None of these guarantees you show up in an AI Overview or a ChatGPT recommendation. What they do is give every engine, from Google to a voice assistant, the accurate and useful information it needs to consider you at all. If you want a baseline before you start, your AI digital marketing score shows where your online presence stands today.

Make Your Website Clear and Answer-First

A customer landing on your site should understand three things within seconds: what you do, where you work, and how to reach you. If they have to hunt for your service area or a phone number, they leave and call someone else.

Write your pages the way customers ask questions. Someone with a leaking water heater searches for “water heater repair” and wants a plain answer about whether you handle it, what it costs, and how fast you can come. Clear service pages, a page for each city you serve, and short answers to common questions all help. This kind of content optimization matches how customers actually phrase a search.

If your current website makes these updates difficult, a modern website builder or professional website service can make it easier to organize service, location, and FAQ content clearly.

Get Your Listings and Business Information Consistent Across the Web

Your phone number, hours, service area, and business name should match everywhere they appear online. When your Google profile says you close at 6 but another directory says 5, a customer searching after work may decide you’re closed and move on.

AI-powered search experiences may also encounter business information from websites, listings, and other publicly available sources. Keeping those details consistent gives customers clearer information and gives search systems more reliable context about your business. Start with the profile they check first, your Google Business Profile, then confirm the major directories agree with it.

Build and Respond to Reviews

Reviews carry weight with customers deciding who to call, and they also contribute to the broader online reputation that search and AI systems may encounter when evaluating your business. A profile with recent reviews and thoughtful replies reads as active. One that went quiet a year ago reads as neglected.

Make a review request part of your normal follow-up after every job, while the work is still fresh in the customer’s mind. A tool like a Google review link generator makes that ask a single tap for the customer. Then reply to what comes in, including the critical ones. Reputation management software can automate the ask and help you respond quickly during busy weeks.

Write Content Around Real Customer Questions

Customers search for answers before they ever contact a business. Questions like “why is my AC leaking water” or “how much does drain cleaning cost” are chances to show up and prove you know your trade.

You don’t need long articles every week. A few honest answers to the questions customers actually ask keep your site active and give engines something useful to pull from. Notes from a completed job often become a helpful page on their own.

This matters more each year. In 2026, 45% of consumers used an AI tool to find a local business, up from 6% the year before. Clear, accurate and trustworthy business information gives these tools better context when they evaluate potential recommendations.

If most of your customers still find you through Google, it’s fair to ask whether AI visibility is worth any attention at all. AI hasn’t replaced Google. It has become one more place customers look.

Google is still where most local searches begin, and 71% of consumers use it at some point when looking for a local business. What’s changed is that Google is no longer the only stop. Three out of four people now use more than one channel in a single search, moving between review sites, social media, and AI search tools before they decide who to call.

Say a customer asks ChatGPT for a good electrician in their area and gets back two or three names. That shortlist is the AI’s contribution. The customer then opens Google, reads your reviews, checks your hours, and looks at your website before picking up the phone.

AI helped build the list, but Google and your own online presence helped them verify it.

AI visibility can influence discovery even when it doesn’t lead directly to a website visit. BrightLocal found that only 18% of consumers using AI for local search were ready to contact the recommended business immediately; most continued researching through Google or other channels before deciding.

That means direct AI referral traffic tells only part of the story. Pay attention to whether your overall search visibility is translating into calls, leads, and booked work.

By now the pattern should be clear. SEO helps you rank in Google. AEO helps you show up in direct answers and voice search results. GEO helps improve your visibility in generative AI responses, including citations, mentions, and recommendations.

Three different outcomes, and one set of work underneath all of them, which comes down to four priorities:

• Useful website content that answers the questions customers actually ask, in plain language.
• Accurate local information so your name, hours, phone number, and service area match everywhere they appear.
• Strong reviews collected steadily after each job and answered when they come in.
• Consistent signals across the web so every profile, listing, and page tells the same story about your business.

Keep these four in good shape, and you give every engine, from Google to a voice assistant to ChatGPT, what it needs to find you and trust you. The trouble is that maintaining them takes time you’d rather spend on the work customers pay you for.

That’s where Thryv Search Boosts™ can help. Thryv AEO & SEO provides expert-managed search support across traditional and AI-powered search, so the work behind your visibility doesn’t become another job on your plate. It can work alongside the tools you already use, giving you expert search support without requiring you to rebuild the rest of your workflow.

None of this asks you to tear out the tools you already rely on. If your scheduling or job management runs somewhere else, keep it. The goal is to make your business easier to find and easier to trust, then turn that visibility into calls and booked work.
