Why Your Local Marketing Isn’t Converting: Inconsistent Listings

You’ve got a Google Business Profile. You’ve got a Facebook page. Maybe you’ve even invested in a website. You’re doing everything local businesses are supposed to do to get found online. So why are customers still choosing someone else?

For many service-based companies, such as plumbers, HVAC contractors, and roofers, the problem isn’t service quality, pricing, or even reviews. It’s something much less obvious: inconsistent business information across the internet.

Maybe your phone number is outdated in one directory. Your business hours are different on another. Your address is formatted incorrectly somewhere else. These small discrepancies may seem harmless, but they can confuse customers, damage trust, and make search engines less confident about recommending your business.

In fact, 62% of consumers say they would avoid using a business if they found incorrect information online, according to BrightLocal’s 2023 Local Business Discovery and Trust Report. When customers can’t trust your basic business details, they often move on to a competitor without a second thought.

That’s where local listings marketing comes in. When your business information is accurate and consistent across search engines, directories, maps, and local listing websites, you improve your visibility, build trust, and create more opportunities for customers to choose your business.

Local listings marketing is the process of managing your business information across the internet so customers and search engines can easily find and trust your business. This includes details like your business name, address, phone number, website, hours, and services.

It’s important to understand the difference between a local business listing and a local listing website. Your listing is your business profile. The local listing website, such as Google, Yelp, Thumbtack, or Apple Maps, is the platform where that profile lives. The problem starts when those listings don’t match.

Imagine a homeowner searches for “HVAC repair near me” on their phone. They find your business, but the phone number listed is outdated. Or your Google Business Profile shows one set of hours, while another directory shows a different set. Rather than take the risk, many customers simply move on to the next company in the search results.

However, the impact goes beyond lost leads. Google’s local ranking algorithm looks for consistency across the web when deciding which businesses to trust and recommend. When your business information varies across sites, it sends mixed signals that can hurt your visibility in local search results.

And these inconsistencies often hide in places business owners rarely check, like old directory profiles, data aggregators, map listings, industry-specific directories, and social media accounts that haven’t been updated in years.

Many business owners think local listings marketing starts and ends with their name, address, and phone number (NAP). While those details are critical, today’s local listings contain much more information that influences both search visibility and customer decisions.

Here’s what every business listing should include:

Listing Element	Why It Matters
Business Name	Use your exact business name everywhere online. Even small variations can create confusion for customers and search engines.
Primary Phone Number	Use the phone number customers should always call. Avoid switching numbers across platforms.
Physical Address or Service Area	If customers visit your location, provide a complete address. Service-area businesses should accurately define their service regions.
Hours of Operation	Keep regular and holiday hours up to date so customers know when you’re available.
Business Categories	Select the most specific category available on each platform to help your business appear in relevant searches.
Website URL	Link directly to your primary website to drive traffic and provide additional information.
Business Description	Write a clear, keyword-rich description of your services. Aim for 150-300 words and customize it slightly for each platform when possible.
Photos	Include high-quality images of your location, team, completed projects, vehicles, and before-and-after work. Photos help build trust and improve engagement.
Reviews and Star Rating	Actively collect, monitor, and respond to reviews. Strong ratings can influence both rankings and customer decisions.

Beyond the Basics: Rich Elements

Many local listing websites offer additional features that can help turn searchers into customers. Google Business Profile is especially powerful because it allows businesses to add information beyond the standard profile fields.

These enhanced elements can increase visibility and improve conversion rates:

• Services List: Showcase specific services you offer so customers can quickly see whether you’re a fit for their needs.
• Booking Link: Give customers a direct path to schedule appointments, consultations, or estimates.
• Q&A Section: Answer common customer questions before they pick up the phone.
• Google Posts: Share promotions, seasonal offers, company updates, and helpful tips directly within your business profile.

The more complete and accurate your listings are, the easier it is for customers and search engines to trust your business.

Not every local listing website deserves the same amount of attention. For most service businesses, the goal isn’t to be listed everywhere, but to be listed accurately on the platforms that customers and search engines trust most.

For years, local search was all about getting someone to click on your website. Today, that’s no longer the only goal. AI-powered search experiences, including Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Apple Intelligence, and Perplexity, are increasingly answering local search questions directly. When someone searches for “best plumber near me” or asks an AI assistant for HVAC repair recommendations, they may receive a list of businesses without ever visiting any of their websites.

Where does that information come from? In many cases, AI systems pull data from local business listings, maps platforms, review sites, and trusted directories across the web. If your business information is inaccurate, outdated, incomplete, or missing altogether, AI search tools may overlook your business or, worse, display incorrect information to potential customers.

This means local listings marketing is no longer just about traditional SEO. It’s also becoming a critical part of AI visibility. Businesses that maintain accurate, consistent listings across multiple platforms give search engines and AI systems the confidence to recommend them.

AEO for Local Businesses

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your business easier for AI-powered search tools to understand, trust, and recommend. While the technology is evolving quickly, a few foundational best practices are already clear:

• Audit your listings now: AI tools rely on accurate business data. Review your listings regularly to ensure your name, address, phone number, website, hours, and service information are correct everywhere they appear.
• Prioritize direct publisher integrations: Whenever possible, use tools that push updates directly to platforms like Google, Apple Maps, Facebook, and Yelp. Direct integrations typically provide faster and more reliable updates than relying solely on data aggregators.
• Build rich, consistent profiles: Complete every available field in your listings, including services, descriptions, photos, FAQs, booking links, and business categories. The more complete and consistent your information is across platforms, the easier it is for AI systems to verify and surface your business.

As AI-powered search becomes more common, businesses with strong, well-maintained listings will have a significant advantage. The same information that helps customers find you today may determine whether AI assistants recommend you tomorrow.

If you’re a typical small business owner, you’re already wearing multiple hats. You’re the technician, the scheduler, the estimator, the customer service representative, and sometimes even the bookkeeper. That’s why managing dozens of local listings manually isn’t realistic.

A business may have listings on 30, 40, or even more platforms. Every time your hours change, you add a new service, update your phone number, or move locations, those changes need to be reflected everywhere. Even businesses with dedicated office staff often struggle to keep listings accurate because manual updates are time-consuming and error-prone.

Effective listings management involves several ongoing tasks:

• Claim and verify your listings across every major platform to maintain control over your business information.
• Audit existing listings for accuracy and identify outdated or incomplete information.
• Eliminate or merge duplicate listings to avoid confusing customers and search engines.
• Push consistent updates across all platforms whenever your hours, phone number, address, website, or services change.
• Monitor new listings automatically generated by data aggregators and ensure the information is accurate.
• Track performance metrics such as impressions, calls, website visits, and direction requests to understand what’s driving results.

This is where listings management software becomes valuable. Instead of logging into dozens of individual platforms, you can update your business information once and automatically sync those changes across multiple listings.

The most effective solutions go a step further by pushing updates directly to publishers rather than relying solely on data aggregators. Direct publisher integrations typically result in faster updates, greater accuracy, and fewer opportunities for conflicting information to appear online.

But what does that look like in practice? When KL Roofing, a roofing company, implemented a more centralized approach to managing its online presence, the business improved visibility across key search platforms. It made it easier for customers to find accurate information online. Rather than spending time updating listings individually, the team could focus more on serving customers and growing the business.

That’s the goal of automation: less administrative work, fewer errors, and better visibility where customers are searching.

With Thryv’sⓇ business listings management software, businesses can manage listings from a single dashboard, sync updates across major platforms, monitor performance, and help ensure their information stays accurate wherever customers are searching.

Running a service business means you’re already doing the work of three or four people. You’re managing customers, scheduling jobs, sending invoices, handling estimates, and trying to grow the business all at once. The last thing you need is another marketing task on your plate.

The good news is that effective local listings marketing doesn’t have to mean spending hours logging into directories, chasing down duplicate listings, or manually updating your information across dozens of platforms. You don’t need to become a local SEO expert. You don’t need to check 40 directories one by one. You just need accurate information to show up consistently wherever customers are looking, and wherever search engines and AI tools pull their data.

That’s where the right technology can make a difference. A listings management solution helps keep your business information synchronized across major publishers, while a complete marketing platform helps you manage the rest of your online presence from one place.

That’s what Thryv’s Listings Management is built for. It’s included in Thryv’s free trial, along with powerful tools for reputation management, social media management, and the AI Website Builder.
