How to Use AI in Marketing: A Guide for Small Business Owners

A homeowner fills out your contact form on Saturday night after their water heater fails. By the time you see the message Monday morning, they’ve already hired someone else.

That kind of missed opportunity happens every day. Leads sit unanswered, review requests get forgotten, social media goes quiet, and your business becomes harder to find online. It’s rarely because you don’t care. Your day fills up quickly, and marketing often gets pushed aside.

Learning how to use AI in marketing starts with solving these problems. AI can respond to inquiries, request reviews, create AI-generated social posts, and follow up with customers so you have more time to serve them.

You don’t need to learn a dozen new tools or become a marketing expert. Start with one task that’s slowing your business down, prove it works, and build from there.

In this guide, you’ll learn practical ways to use AI in your marketing, what tasks to automate first, and how Thryv® helps small businesses attract more customers, win more jobs, and drive repeat business with less manual work.

For a small business, using AI in marketing means letting software handle the repetitive work that often gets pushed to the bottom of your to-do list. That could be drafting a social media post, writing a blog post, sending a review request, following up with a new lead, or organizing customer information so you know who to contact next. Those tasks still get done while you’re focused on serving customers.

Imagine you finish a water heater installation and head straight to your next appointment. Instead of needing to remember to request a review that evening, AI can send a personalized message while the experience is still fresh. A few more reviews each month can improve your visibility in local search results, strengthen your SEO (search engine optimization) efforts, and give future customers more confidence to call.

Some AI tools use generative AI for content creation, while others automate follow-ups, reminders, and customer communication after you’ve set them up.

More than 80% of small businesses already use artificial intelligence in marketing. The biggest opportunity comes from connecting those tools so you spend less time switching between apps while maintaining brand control.

Keeping everything in one place makes day-to-day marketing much easier. For example, after you complete a plumbing repair, Thryv’s AI Content Assistant uses generative AI to turn your job details into a ready-to-publish social post, CaptionAI formats the caption for each platform, and Automated Reviews sends a personalized review request automatically. You approve the messaging before it goes live, giving you confidence that every piece of content reflects your business.

Customers can’t hire your business if they can’t find it. One of the easiest ways to improve your visibility is by keeping your online listings and Google Business Profile accurate and active.

Incorrect business hours, phone numbers, or addresses can cost you calls. AI-powered business listings management software helps keep your information accurate across major directories.

Posting updates, adding photos, and answering customer questions keeps your business looking active. After completing a landscaping project or plumbing repair, Thryv’s AI Content Assistant can turn your job details into ready-to-publish social posts, so your online presence stays current without starting every post from scratch.

Reviews also play a major role in whether customers choose your business. Imagine two plumbers showing up in local search. One has recent five-star reviews with thoughtful responses. The other hasn’t received a new review in months. Many homeowners will call the business that appears more active and trusted.

If collecting reviews has been inconsistent, Thryv’s Automated Reviews can send review requests automatically after each completed job, while AI Review Response helps draft personalized replies you can review before publishing. That keeps your online reputation growing without adding another item to your to-do list.

Your website deserves attention, too. Thryv’s AI Website Builder helps create service pages, location-specific content, and FAQs built faster and SEO/AEO-optimized content that helps your business get found in Google Search, ChatGPT, and voice search. The same approach works for blogs, emails, and social media if you’re learning how to use AI for content creation across your business.

Every missed follow-up is a job someone else books. A customer who fills out your contact form during lunch or sends a Facebook message after work usually expects a quick response. If they don’t hear back, they’ll often contact the next business on their list.

AI helps prevent those missed opportunities by capturing every inquiry, responding quickly, and keeping follow-up moving until a customer books. Instead of relying on memory or handwritten notes, every lead stays organized, and every opportunity has a better chance of becoming revenue.

Using AI for Lead Capture

Leads come from phone calls, website forms, live chat, social media, and Google Business Profile. When they’re scattered across different places, it’s easy to miss one.

Once it’s set up, Thryv’s AI Lead Insights captures those inquiries in one place and uses lead scoring to help identify which ones need immediate attention. For example, someone requesting emergency drain service today should probably be prioritized over someone requesting a remodeling estimate next month.

If you’re finding it difficult to keep track of new inquiries across multiple channels, resources about AI tools for business development can help you understand how AI supports lead management. Thryv’s AI Lead Insights automatically captures missed calls, website forms, chats, and messages in one place, then uses machine learning and lead scoring to identify the inquiries most likely to become booked jobs and recommends a clear next step for each one.

Automating Follow-Up

Many customers don’t book the first time they reach out. They get busy, compare estimates, or forget to call back. Once it’s set up, AI sends timely follow-up emails or texts on schedule, creating consistent email marketing and customer communication without adding another task to your day while keeping your marketing workflows moving even when your schedule is full.

For example, someone who requests an estimate on Tuesday could receive a confirmation within minutes, a reminder a few days later if they haven’t scheduled, and a final check-in before the opportunity goes cold. You create the sequence once, and every follow-up happens automatically.

AI Response to Inbound Leads

Customers don’t always reach out during business hours. A homeowner with a broken water heater at 9 p.m. may send a message expecting an answer before deciding who to call the next morning.

AI chat tools can answer common questions, collect job details, and let customers know when they’ll hear from your team. That quick response helps keep the conversation moving while giving customers confidence that someone has already received their request.

With Thryv, a missed call on Friday afternoon, a website form submitted that evening, and a Facebook message sent Saturday morning all land in one place, and AI Lead Insights flags who still needs a response. By Monday morning, you know exactly where to start instead of piecing together conversations from different apps.

Staying in touch after the job helps bring customers back. AI automates review requests, maintenance reminders, seasonal promotions, and check-ins so you stay top of mind without adding more work.

Start by automatically requesting reviews while each completed job is still fresh in the customer’s mind. Thryv’s Automated Reviews sends personalized review requests on schedule, making it easier to collect feedback while customers are most likely to respond.

AI keeps customer relationships going by reconnecting with people at the right time. For example, after a water heater replacement, the customer could receive a review request shortly after the job, a 30-day check-in a few weeks later, and a maintenance reminder the following year. You build the sequence once using Thryv’s AI Automation Assistant, and it continues running automatically.

Those consistent touchpoints create better customer experiences, generate repeat work, and help keep your schedule full without relying on memory.

The same approach can also strengthen your online reputation, especially when you use AI for customer reviews to request feedback and respond consistently after every completed job.

It’s easy to start collecting AI tools. One handles social posts, another manages reviews, another sends emails, and another manages chat.

When those tools aren’t connected, leads, customer information, and email marketing can quickly fall out of sync. Keeping customer information connected helps AI coordinate review requests, follow-up messages, appointment reminders, and email marketing based on each customer’s latest activity.

If you already rely on a specialized tool that integrates well with the rest of your business, it may still make sense to keep it. As you compare different AI marketing tools for small business, think about how well they fit into the way you already attract, communicate with, and retain customers.

Start by solving the problem that’s costing you the most customers. If leads wait too long for a response, automate follow-up. If reviews are inconsistent, automate review requests. Many effective AI strategies for small businesses begin with one high-impact improvement.

Here’s a simple four-week plan you can start this month.

Week 1: Automate Review Requests

Set up AI to automatically request reviews while the experience is still fresh. More recent reviews can improve your visibility in local search and give potential customers more confidence to contact you.

Week 2: Centralize Your Leads

Bring calls, website forms, chat messages, and social inquiries into one place so every lead gets a response.

Week 3: Turn On Automated Follow-Up

Create a simple sequence for new inquiries, whether that’s a confirmation message, a reminder, or a follow-up after an estimate. Once it’s in place, every lead receives consistent communication, even during your busiest weeks.

Week 4: Schedule Content and Review Your Results

Use AI to create and schedule social posts, then review where inquiries came from, how many reviews you earned, and how quickly leads received a response.

If you’re using several AI tools, it may be time to simplify. Thryv’s AI-powered tools bring your visibility, customer communication, lead management, reviews, and follow-up together while helping protect customer data and data privacy. You can try core tools like Social Media Management, Reputation Management, Listings Management, and the AI-Powered Website Builder with a free trial so you spend less time managing software and more time helping customers.

Growth often slows because simple marketing tasks don’t happen consistently. Leads wait for a response, reviews don’t get requested, and past customers drift away.

You don’t have to automate everything to see results. Start with the task that’s costing you the most customers today. Once that process runs consistently, add the next one. Those small improvements help you get found online, respond faster, earn more repeat business, and spend less time on routine marketing.

As you evaluate AI tools for your business, look for software that brings your visibility, reviews, follow-up, and customer communication together. That’s the approach behind Thryv’s AI-powered marketing tools. AI Content Assistant, AI Lead Insights, AI Automation Assistant, Automated Reviews, and AI Review Response help you spend less time managing marketing while turning more opportunities into booked jobs.
