5 Ways to Use AI in Your Small Business

Running a small business means wearing many hats. But what if AI could take a few off your hands? From saving time to attracting new customers, AI tools are no longer just for large companies with substantial budgets. These tools can help small business owners stay organized, automate repetitive tasks, and connect with customers more efficiently.

AI isn’t just helping you show up anymore — it’s helping you get chosen.

Search behavior has shifted. Customers aren’t just typing into search engines, they’re asking questions in AI tools, voice assistants, and chat-based search. That means your marketing needs to do more than rank. It needs to answer.

That’s where AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) comes in.

Today’s AI strategies should focus on:

• Being the best answer, not just the top result
• Structuring content for AI-generated responses
• Showing up across search, voice, and AI assistants

1. Collect and respond to reviews automatically.
2. Quickly generate content ideas and captions.
3. Send targeted emails and texts on autopilot.
4. Attract leads and stay organized.
5. Automated follow-ups.
6. Be the Answer, Not Just an Option

1. Collect and respond to reviews automatically.

Imagine turning every happy customer into a glowing endorsement, with zero manual hassle.  That’s exactly what Thryv’s AI Review Response enables small businesses to do. It aggregates reviews from 24+ platforms, including Google Business Profile, Yelp, Trustpilot, and more, into a single dashboard, allowing you to view all your feedback in one place. When a new review arrives, simply tap the AI wand to generate three personalized response options.

If you want a different tone or style, refresh the suggestions, complete with emojis to keep replies engaging, until it fits your brand voice. You can edit or send the AI-crafted responses instantly, helping you meet rising customer expectations (such as the 69% who expect a reply within a week), strengthen your reputation, and build trust. This smart automation ensures timely and authentic customer engagement.

Turn reviews into AI-visible content

Reviews are no longer just social proof, they’re training data for AI-driven recommendations.

Search engines and AI assistants pull from:

• Review sentiment
• Keywords in customer feedback
• Response quality from businesses

Use AI to:

• Summarize common review themes into website copy
• Turn reviews into FAQ content
• Respond with keyword-rich, natural language answers

2. Quickly generate content ideas and captions.

Keeping your social media content fresh and consistent is easy with CaptionAI and Content Assistant. Small business owners gain creative power and efficiency in one place, enabling them to focus on strategy rather than staring at a blank caption box. Simply enter a prompt, and it’ll quickly generate multiple captions, including hashtags and emojis, optimized for platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. You can adjust the tone and style, or regenerate captions, until they match your brand’s voice. The platform also formats captions for length and style differences, specifically for each social network. Plus, you’ll have access to curated templates, visuals, and content suggestions from trusted sources like Google News and Pexels to jumpstart your creativity. You can also schedule your posts in advance with the integrated social scheduler, turning your social media into a streamlined, set-and-forget marketing channel.

Structure content for answer engines

Repurposing content is no longer just about format; it’s about findability in AI search.

When creating your pillar content, include:

• Clear question-based headers (H2s and H3s)
• Short, direct answers (40–60 words)
• Bullet points and step-by-step instructions

This makes your content easier for AI tools to scan, extract, and feature.

After creating your blog, generate:

• 5–10 FAQ questions based on real customer queries
• Short-form answers optimized for voice search

Focus on tools that improve visibility (not just efficiency)

Not all AI tools are created equal. Prioritize ones that help you:

• Generate SEO + AEO-friendly content
• Analyze customer questions
• Optimize for local and voice search

3. Send targeted emails and texts on autopilot.

Stay connected with leads and customers without adding to your to-do list. Thryv’s AI-powered Automated Campaigns help you do this effortlessly. Set up emails and texts triggered by actions like appointment bookings, sign-ups, or inactivity, and watch your outreach happen automatically. The platform chooses the best delivery channel–email or text–based on the contact info. The AI Assistant crafts engaging, branded messages from simple prompts, which are also customizable. These smart campaigns nurture leads, speed up follow-ups, and help close sales while you focus on running your business. It’s like having a full marketing team working quietly in the background to deliver personalized and timely communication every time.

Optimize personalization for AI discovery

Personalization doesn’t just improve engagement; it increases your chances of being surfaced in AI-generated answers.

AI tools prioritize content that reflects:

• Real customer intent
• Specific use cases
• Clear, direct language

Turn your segmented campaigns into FAQ-style content. For example:

• “Best service for first-time customers”
• “When should you book your next appointment?”

These formats help your content appear in AI answers, not just emails.

4. Attract leads and stay organized.

Thryv combines marketing and CRM tools, giving small businesses a seamless way to manage leads and clients. Choose between two powerful CRMs that integrate scheduling, payments, client communication, and AI-powered features like review responses and content creation. It offers AI-driven automations that save time by handling follow-ups, social content, and customer interactions. With a centralized dashboard for contacts, communications, bookings, and payments, you eliminate manual work and the need for multiple apps. Thryv provides an AI-powered command center that helps you stay organized, close deals faster, and grow your business smarter.

Test for answer visibility, not just clicks

Traditional A/B testing focuses on opens and clicks. Now, you should also test:

• Which phrasing gets picked up in AI answers
• Which headlines align with real search questions
• Which formats perform best in voice search

Test variations of:

• Question-based headlines vs. promotional headlines
• “How to” vs. “Why” content
• Short vs. long-form answers

Track visibility beyond traditional metrics

Clicks and opens still matter — but now you should also track:

• Featured snippet appearances
• AI-generated answer visibility
• FAQ engagement
• Voice search traffic

Thryv research has found that 80% of small businesses using AI say it’s essential for reaching new customers, reiterating the need to measure how AI impacts visibility and acquisition.

Track:

• Which FAQs drive traffic
• Which pages generate zero-click visibility
• Time saved using AI tools

5. Automated follow-ups.

Improve your customer engagement and never miss a lead with Thryv’s automation tools. It offers powerful automation tools that keep your leads engaged. Use the versatile Automation Builder to create workflows that are triggered as soon as someone fills out a form or visits your landing page. Plus, it also delivers personalized nurture campaigns crafted with AI-driven templates tailored to your brand—such as welcome messages, appointment reminders, or promotions—via email or text. Choose from pre-built sequences like lead generation, welcome series, or re-engagement campaigns to get started quickly.

Predict intent, not just behavior

AI segmentation is evolving beyond “who might buy” to “what they’re asking next.”

This allows you to:

• Create content before customers search
• Align messaging with future intent
• Show up earlier in the decision journey

Build content around predicted questions like:

• “What should I do before hiring [service]?”
• “How much does [service] cost?”

6. Be the Answer, Not Just an Option

Search is no longer just about ranking — it’s about being selected by AI.

AI-powered search tools prioritize content that:

• Directly answers questions
• Uses simple, conversational language
• Demonstrates expertise and trust

How to optimize for AEO:

• Add FAQ sections to key pages
• Use schema markup (FAQ, How-To, Local Business)
• Write in a natural, question-and-answer format
• Keep answers concise and helpful

Take your top 5 service pages and add:

• 3–5 FAQs each
• Clear, direct answers under 60 words
• Location-specific phrasing

Build trust signals for AI-generated results

AI platforms favor content that is:

• Consistent in tone
• Factually accurate
• Backed by real experience

This is where your brand voice becomes a ranking factor.

Create a reusable AI prompt that includes:

• Brand tone
• Key services
• Target audience
• Top FAQs

This ensures consistency across all AI-generated content.

AI helps you show up. AEO helps you get chosen. The businesses that win today aren’t just creating more content; they’re creating better answers.

Start small:

• Add FAQs to one page
• Turn one blog into answer-driven content
• Use AI to identify your customers’ top questions

Because when your marketing is built to answer — not just attract — you don’t just stay top of mind. You become the obvious choice.
