Local SEO vs Local AEO: What’s the Difference & When Does Each Matter?
You’ve put time into showing up in Google by keeping your business information accurate, collecting reviews, and building out your website. Now customers are also asking ChatGPT and other AI tools who to hire. So, does that change where you should focus your time?
Understanding local SEO vs. local AEO can help you prioritize the work most likely to bring in calls and customers. Local SEO supports your visibility when nearby customers search Google Search, Google Maps, and other local results, while local AEO can help your business surface in AI-generated answers and recommendations.
Search behavior already reflects these different opportunities. Whitespark found Google AI Overviews in 68% of 540 local-business queries it studied. For searches with clear local intent, Google’s map pack appeared 93% of the time, while AI Overviews appeared 15%. AI Overviews appeared more often when people researched and asked broader questions.
Many of the same local SEO fundamentals support visibility across both. Here’s where each matters and where to focus so more local customers can find and choose your business.
What is Local SEO vs Local AEO?
Local SEO (Search Engine Optimization) helps your business appear when nearby customers use a search query to find a provider, such as “emergency plumber near me.” Local AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) helps an answer engine understand your business and expertise and potentially include it in AI summaries and recommendations.
Local SEO in Plain Terms
Local SEO helps nearby customers find your business when they’re actively looking for a local provider.
Someone with a burst pipe might search “emergency plumber near me.” Google can show nearby plumbers in its map pack and Google Maps, along with other map results and organic search results. Your Google Business Profile, local listings, reviews, website content, and other local signals can all affect how easily customers find you.
These are part of the local SEO fundamentals that support local discovery and help local service businesses show up when customers are ready to call.

Local AEO in Plain Terms
Local AEO helps AI search engines understand useful information about your business and the questions you can answer.
Someone might ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity, “What should I look for when hiring an emergency plumber?” They might later ask for plumbers in their area. Clear information about your services, locations, expertise, and reputation gives AI systems more context about your business. Because AI platforms do not publish a universal local-ranking formula, focus on making that information clear, consistent, and easy to understand across relevant sources.
Comparing Local SEO vs Local AEO
| Comparison | Local SEO | Local AEO |
| Primary goal | Help nearby customers find and contact your business in local search | Help your business surface in relevant AI-generated answers and recommendations |
| Common surfaces | Google Search, Maps, local pack, and organic results | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and other AI search engines |
| Typical search | “Emergency plumber near me” | “What should I look for when hiring an emergency plumber?” |
| Where it helps | When customers are finding and comparing nearby providers | When customers are researching, asking questions, and looking for recommendations |
| What supports it | Google Business Profile, local citations, reviews, website content, and other local signals | Clear business information, useful content, reviews, local context, and consistent information across relevant sources |
| What success looks like | More calls, website visits, and bookings from local search | More opportunities to reach potential customers through AI-powered discovery |

Where Local SEO & Local AEO Overlap
Local SEO and local AEO draw on much of the same information about your business. That includes your local listings and local citations, or mentions of your business information across directories and other websites. Reviews, service and location content, internal linking between related pages, and structured data, which helps search platforms understand details on your website, can also support local discovery across traditional and AI-powered search results.
Consider an HVAC company that recently expanded into two nearby towns. Its website lists the new service areas, but several directories still show the old coverage. Someone searching for HVAC service in one of those towns may overlook the company and call a competitor instead.
A strong foundation comes down to a few areas:
- Accurate business information: Keep your name, phone number, hours, services, and service areas current wherever customers may find you. Keep your core business information consistent across the directories and platforms customers use. If managing those updates manually becomes too time-consuming, listing-management software can help centralize the work.
- Recent, genuine reviews: Reviews help potential customers decide whether they trust your business and provide current information about the work you do. When requesting reviews and responding to them starts slipping during busy weeks, Reputation Management can automate review requests and use Thryv AI to draft responses for you to review and edit.
- Clear service and location content: Explain what you do, where you work, and the questions customers commonly ask. Customers get the information they need, while ranking systems get clearer context about when your business may be relevant to a local search.
- A well-structured website: Make your services, locations, contact details, and helpful answers easy to find. Internal linking can help connect related information across your website, while technical SEO and structured data can give search engines additional context about your pages. These practices do not guarantee visibility in AI-generated answers.
Keeping these shared local signals current gives customers and search platforms a clearer picture of your business, which can support visibility in map results, other local search results, and AI-powered search.

Why Small Businesses Need Local SEO & Local AEO (Not One or The Other)
The same customer can move between AI search and Google before choosing who to call.
Say someone’s AC stops cooling on a hot afternoon. They might ask an AI search engine what could be causing the problem and whether they need professional help. Once it’s clear they need a technician, they might search “AC repair near me” and open Google Maps. From there, they can compare nearby companies, read reviews, and decide who to call.
Useful content allows your business to appear during that early research. A strong local presence can help the same customer find you again when they’re ready to hire, while reviews and accurate business details give them more information to make a decision.
Your search visibility strategy should support both parts of that journey so you can reach potential customers earlier and remain easy to find when they’re ready to hire.

How to Improve Local SEO & Local AEO Together
Focus your time on the areas most likely to help customers find, trust, and contact your business.
1. Keep Your Business Information Accurate
An outdated phone number, incorrect hours, or missing service area can cost you a lead. If someone needs an electrician on Saturday and your listing says you’re closed, they may call another business.
Check your Google Business Profile and major local listings for your phone number, hours, services, and service areas. Keep that information consistent wherever customers may find you. If managing directories one at a time is taking too much time, business listings management software can help you update information across 60+ sites from one place.
2. Build a Steady Flow of Customer Reviews
Recent reviews can help someone choose between local businesses, especially when the feedback mentions the service they need.
Make requesting reviews part of your follow-up after each job and respond when customers leave feedback. When that work starts slipping during busy weeks, Thryv’s reputation management software can automate review requests. When a review comes in, Thryv AI can draft a response for you to approve and edit, helping you stay responsive without writing every reply from scratch.
3. Make Your Services and Service Areas Clear
Generic website copy can make it difficult to tell exactly what you do and where you work. An HVAC company that repairs furnaces, installs heat pumps, and offers emergency service should make those services and locations clear on its website.
Use specific service information and relevant local keywords where they naturally describe the work you perform and areas you serve. Make your contact information, FAQs, and related service pages easy to find, too. Internal linking can connect those pages, while technical SEO basics such as structured data can help search engines and AI systems understand important details about your business.
If keeping your website current is difficult, a small business website builder gives you one place to manage services, locations, contact details, and other information customers need when deciding whether to contact you.
4. Answer the Questions Customers Ask Before They Call
Your actual customer conversations are a useful source of content ideas. Write down the three questions you hear most often on calls or before estimates, especially questions about price, timing, common problems, or when professional help is needed.
An HVAC company might regularly hear, “Why is my AC running but the house is still warm?” Turn that question into a clear website answer or FAQ that explains likely causes, what the homeowner can check, and when it’s time to call. The customer gets a useful answer, while search and AI systems get clearer content they may be able to surface in relevant search or answer-driven experiences.
5. Track How Customers Are Finding You
Better visibility matters when it leads to more business. Track calls, website leads, and form fills alongside your Google visibility and local rankings to see which efforts generate new opportunities.
Thryv’s Marketing Dashboard brings leads, calls, and form fills together and provides AI-powered recommendations on what to work on next. You can use that information to see how your visibility is turning into customer activity and decide where to focus your time.
AI visibility is still developing as a measurement area. Where the information is available, you can also watch referral traffic from AI search engines and check whether your business appears in relevant AI recommendations or summaries.
For a broader view of your online presence, Thryv’s AI Digital Marketing Score evaluates your listings, website, social presence, and SEO, then gives you a prioritized action plan. That can help you identify which areas need work before deciding what to tackle next.
Maintaining your visibility is ongoing work as your business and the ways customers search continue to change.

FAQs About Local SEO vs Local AEO
Accurate local listings and citations, genuine customer reviews, clear service and location pages, and useful answers to customer questions can support both. Together, they give search engines and AI systems clearer information about what your business does and where it works.
For local SEO, track local visibility along with calls, website leads, bookings, and other activity that can become revenue. AI visibility is less standardized, but you can watch referral traffic from AI search engines, relevant brand mentions, and whether those visits turn into leads.
A complete, accurate Google Business Profile supports visibility in Google Search, Google Maps, and the map pack, making it an important part of local SEO. It also adds accurate information to your broader online presence that AI systems may use when understanding your business, although a profile doesn’t guarantee placement in AI summaries or recommendations.
Reviews are among the signals that can influence local search visibility and help customers decide who to contact. They also provide current information about your services and customer experiences that may give AI systems additional context about your business.
Some improvements, such as correcting inaccurate hours or contact details, can help customers as soon as those updates appear. Changes to organic SEO, local rankings, and AI visibility can take longer, so evaluate progress over several months and focus on whether visibility is producing more calls, leads, and customers.
No. Many local AEO fundamentals come from keeping your website, Google Business Profile, reviews and local listings accurate and useful. Tools can help when monitoring and maintaining those areas becomes too time-consuming. For starters, Thryv’s AI Digital Marketing Score can show where your online presence needs attention and give you a prioritized plan for what to work on next.
