How to Stop Losing Customers to Competitors with Better Business Listings

A customer searches for your business, ready to call or stop by. Instead, they find an old phone number, outdated hours, or an incorrect address. Rather than spending time figuring out which information is right, they click on a competitor whose details are accurate and up to date. It happens every day, and most businesses never realize they lost the customer because of a bad listing.

The challenge is that local business listings don’t live in just one place anymore. Your business information is spread across Google, Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp, Facebook, dozens of online directories, and even AI-powered search tools. The moment you change your hours, move locations, or update your branding, those listings can quickly fall out of sync, creating confusion for both customers and search engines.

The good news is that managing your local business listings doesn’t have to mean logging into dozens of websites every time something changes. Learn which listings matter most, how to audit what’s already live, and how to keep your information accurate automatically so you can spend less time updating directories and more time serving customers.

A single incorrect business listing can be enough to send a customer somewhere else. In fact, 62% of consumers say they would avoid using a business if they found incorrect information online. When someone is ready to visit your store, schedule an appointment, or call for a quote, they expect the information they find to be accurate. If it isn’t, many won’t take the time to double-check; they’ll simply choose another business.

Some mistakes damage that trust almost immediately. A disconnected phone number, an old address, or outdated business hours create friction at the exact moment someone wants to do business with you. Even smaller inconsistencies, like different business names or mismatched suite numbers across local business directory listings, can leave customers wondering whether they’ve found the right company.

For businesses with multiple locations or franchises, the challenge grows quickly. Each location has its own hours, phone numbers, and local details that need to stay accurate across dozens of websites. Without a consistent local business listings management process, information drifts over time, leading to duplicate listings, conflicting location details, and frustrated customers who show up at the wrong place or call the wrong number.

Many business owners still think of a listing as a form they filled out years ago. In reality, your SEO local business listings are an ongoing data footprint that constantly feeds the databases and tools aggregating your business information. Every update, or missed update, affects how confidently those platforms can recommend your business to potential customers.

The payoff for keeping that information complete is significant. According to Google, customers are 2.7 times more likely to consider a business reputable when they find a complete Business Profile on Google Search and Maps. Accurate local listings for businesses don’t just help people find you; they help convince them to choose you over the competition.

When someone compares two local businesses online, the winner isn’t always the one with the most reviews. More often, it’s the business that gives customers confidence they have the right information.

According to BrightLocal’s 2026 Consumer Search Behavior report, the biggest factors influencing whether consumers contact a local business are:

• Clear and complete business information (32%)
• Review volume (30%)
• Pricing clarity (29%)

That trust starts with NAP consistency – your business name, address, and phone number should match exactly across every platform. If Google lists “Suite 200” but Apple Maps doesn’t, or one directory uses an old phone number while another has the current one, customers may question whether they’ve found the correct business. Consistent business local listings also make it easier for search engines to display your information in local search results confidently.

Keeping your business hours current is just as important. Holiday closures, seasonal schedules, and temporary changes are often overlooked, yet they’re some of the first details customers check before visiting. Showing up to locked doors because an online listing wasn’t updated is a quick way to lose both a sale and a customer’s trust.

Photos matter, too. Recent images of your storefront, interior, products, team, or completed work reassure customers that your business is active and legitimate. Outdated photos, or no photos at all, can make even an established company appear neglected.

The bigger picture is that your local business listings should tell the same story everywhere customers find you. They should see consistent information that makes contacting you feel like an easy decision.

That expectation is only growing. In fact, 96% of consumers say it’s important for local businesses to manage their online presence actively, and one-third consider it essential. Maintaining accurate local business listings management isn’t just about SEO; it’s one of the fastest ways to build trust before a customer ever reaches out.

Getting found online is no longer just about Google. To stay visible, your business local listings need to be accurate across three overlapping layers.

Core Platforms: Google, Bing, Apple Maps, and Yelp

These are the platforms that power most local searches and navigation. Whether someone searches directly in Google, asks Siri for a nearby business, or uses Bing or Yelp to compare options, they’re relying on the information in your business profile.

Google remains the most important listing to maintain. According to Google, businesses with a complete Business Profile are 70% more likely to attract visits and 50% more likely to be considered for a purchase than businesses with incomplete profiles. That’s why your business name, address, phone number, hours, website, photos, and services should always be current across these core platforms.

Industry and Local Directories

Beyond the major search platforms, customers also discover businesses through local business directory listings and industry-specific websites. Depending on your business, that might include Angi, Healthgrades, TripAdvisor, Houzz, Avvo, or your local chamber of commerce directory.

These directories don’t just send referral traffic; they also help validate your business information across the web. Consistent SEO local business listings strengthen your overall online presence, while outdated or conflicting information can weaken trust with both customers and search engines.

AI Answer Engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini

The newest layer of local discovery is AI. Instead of browsing through a list of search results, consumers are increasingly asking tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini questions such as, “Who’s the best plumber near me?” or “Find a dog groomer that’s open now.”

These AI tools typically don’t maintain their own business databases. Instead, they synthesize information from trusted sources across the web, including search engines, maps, review platforms, business websites, and online local business directory listings. That means inaccurate or inconsistent listings can still influence what AI recommends, or whether your business is mentioned at all.

The takeaway is simple: successful local business listings management isn’t about chasing every new platform individually. It’s about maintaining accurate, consistent information everywhere your business appears so customers, and the tools they use to find businesses, see the same reliable details no matter where they search.

Ranking well on Google is still important, but it’s no longer the whole picture. As more consumers ask AI assistants for local recommendations instead of typing traditional searches, your business information needs to be accurate across the broader web – not just in Google Business Profile. That’s especially important because research shows that only 68% of business contact information shown by ChatGPT and Perplexity matches what’s listed on a business’s Google Business Profile.

One reason is that AI answer engines gather information differently than Google Search. Rather than relying primarily on one business profile, tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini synthesize information from business websites, review platforms, online directories, maps, and other publicly available sources. If those sources disagree with one another, AI may surface outdated information, incomplete details, or skip recommending your business altogether.

That helps explain why performing well in Google doesn’t automatically translate into AI visibility. According to SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index, visibility in ChatGPT’s local recommendations is roughly 30 times harder to achieve than ranking in Google’s local search results, and fewer than half of the businesses that appear in Google’s Local Pack also show up in AI recommendations.

For business owners, this represents a shift in how business local listings should be managed. Traditional local SEO often treated Google as the finish line: optimize your Business Profile, collect reviews, and keep your information current. Those steps still matter, but they’re no longer enough on their own.

Today, AI answer engines have become another important listing surface. The businesses most likely to be recommended are the ones with consistent, trustworthy information across their website, local business listings, review sites, industry directories, and other online sources that AI can verify. In other words, managing local listings for business is no longer just about helping customers find you in search results; it’s about making sure AI has enough confidence in your data to recommend you in the first place.

Submitting your business information to online directories is a good first step, but it’s only the beginning. The real challenge isn’t getting your business listed once. It’s keeping every listing accurate as your business evolves. A new phone number, updated hours, relocation, or rebrand can quickly create inconsistencies across dozens of platforms if those changes aren’t synced everywhere.

With a DIY approach, every update becomes a manual project. You have to remember where your business is listed, log in to each platform individually, and hope you’ve caught every directory that displays your information. That’s manageable when you have one or two listings, but far less realistic when your business local listings appear across search engines, map apps, review sites, niche directories, and the growing number of AI-powered search experiences that rely on the same data.

The time commitment adds up quickly. Even if each platform only takes a few minutes to update, repeating the process across dozens of sites and then checking later to make sure the changes are actually published can easily turn into hours of work. And if even one listing is missed, customers may still encounter outdated information.

Business listings management software takes a different approach. Instead of treating listings as a one-time submission, it treats them as a connected network that stays synchronized over time. When your business information changes, updates are pushed across supported platforms from a single dashboard, helping reduce inconsistencies before they spread. Many solutions also monitor for duplicate listings, flag missing information, and make it easier to maintain consistent local business listings without constantly logging into individual sites.

That kind of consistency matters because many small businesses are already investing in visibility but still struggle with the fundamentals. BrightLocal’s 2025 SMB Marketing Report found that 89% of small businesses invest in organic SEO, yet only 40% have a dedicated business website to anchor those efforts. Keeping your local business listings management strategy connected to an accurate website, and ensuring those details stay synchronized everywhere customers search, is one of the simplest ways to get more value from the marketing you’re already doing.

Getting your business found online is only the beginning. The real goal isn’t just earning the first phone call or website visit, but turning that first interaction into repeat business. Accurate business local listings create the trust that gets customers through the door, but reputation management and follow-up are what keep them coming back.

The most successful local businesses treat listings, reviews, and customer communication as one connected system. A customer finds accurate information, has a smooth experience, leaves a positive review, receives follow-up communications, and remembers your business the next time they need your services. Each step reinforces the next, creating a cycle that builds both visibility and customer loyalty.

That’s exactly what happened for Thryv® customer Boeschen’s Heating & Cooling. By keeping their business information consistent across Google and Facebook while actively managing their online reputation, the company grew from roughly 70 Google reviews to more than 200. Owner Janet Turner summed up the impact simply: “It’s building our online reputation, which builds trust, so we become a customer favorite.”

When your local business listings management strategy connects discovery, reputation, and customer relationships instead of treating them as separate tasks, getting found online becomes more than a marketing win; it becomes the start of long-term customer growth.
