Foursquare Adds Local Business Ratings

The world’s foremost check-in app, Foursquare, continues to innovate in the local search arena. At the core of this innovation is their “Explore” local discovery engine which is jam-packed full of secret sauce.

In their most recent improvement, Foursquare has added ratings to locations that show up in the Explore function of the iOS app.

These rating are based on a 1-10 scoring system and are not based on users manually adding star ratings themselves–like most online ratings sites. Instead, the scoring for this rating system is based on an array of  Foursquare user interactions with those local venues.

“We look at signals like tips, likes, dislikes, popularity, loyalty, local expertise, and nearly 3 billion check-ins from over 25 million people worldwide. And, with every check-in and Explore search, our scores will get smarter and better.”

While this update sounds interesting in theory, it will be interesting to see how this twist on local ratings stands the test of time.
