Computer Science Education Week

Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) is an annual program focused on inspiring students to take an interest in computer science. During its run this year (December 9-15), students all over the world were invited to try computer science through an Hour of Code. This event reached 10 million students in 170 countries, exposing them to programming and development. Technology is moving rapidly forward and students need more exposure to computer science skills.

I had the incredible opportunity to teach an Hour of Code to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at EA Young Academy. We covered HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. Some students already had programming experience with PHP and Java. The students impressed me by how quickly they understood not only basic programming concepts, but also the detail-oriented nature of coding. The Hour of Code was fun and rewarding for the students, and for me as well. If you have experience in computer science and want to see how even a little bit of coding instruction can influence a student’s education, I highly recommend mentoring a student or participating in an event like an Hour of Code.

Employment in all computer occupations is expected to increase 22% by 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Find out more on how to encourage your local school to offer computer science classes, and why it’s so important to offer these adaptable skills to students at
