How To Overcome Blog Anxiety

Writer's BlockBusinesses large and small have discovered the marketing benefits of having a corporate blog. Recent studies show that blogs are highly effective at generating traffic to your website, generating sales leads, establishing yourself as an expert in your given field and communicating with your existing and potential customers.

  • There’s no such thing as too much content
If you have a blog, you’re a publisher. Being a publisher takes effort, creativity and above all, discipline. In order to really be effective, blogs require consistent attention and a regular supply of timely, relevant content. Businesses that update their blogs on a regular basis generate more leads than those that take only publish sporadically.
  • Bloggers Block
Everyone who has ever put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard has experienced the phenomena known as writer’s block.  Ernest Hemingway once said that the most frightening thing he had ever encountered was a blank sheet of paper.

Fortunately, your blog will likely be held to a different standard than a Hemingway novel. Here are some tips to help you overcome anxiety and get on track.

  • Consistency Breeds Consistency
Many people view their blogs as a necessary evil and therefore place it at the bottom of their priority list. Instead of scheduling time for their blogging activities, they fit them in whenever busy schedules allow and often find themselves banging out a few uninspired (and uninspiring) lines between other activities. Keeping to a schedule, whether daily, bi-weekly or weekly, can help you overcome your anxiety.
  • Don’t Force It
From time to time, you may find that the ideas simply aren’t coming. Instead of staring at a blank sheet of paper as Hemingway did, you may find yourself staring at a blank screen as your blood pressure rises and images of your to-do list dance through your head. At such times, it may be best to step away from your computer for awhile, relax and clear your mind.
  • Seek Inspiration
Ideas aren’t born in a vacuum. If you’re drawing a blank, see what other bloggers in your industry are blogging about and be sure to read the comments from their readers. In many cases you’ll find contrasting opinions that can become the basis for a great post of your own.
  • Engage with Others
If you happen to come across an interesting post that you have a strong opinion about, add your own comment. Comments on other blogs is a great way to build backlinks to your blog and backlinks are SEO gold. Becoming actively involved in other blogs can also lead to guest blogger invitations that can increase your sphere of influence exponentially.
  • Become a Note Taker
Inspiration for blog posts can come to you anyplace and at any time. Maybe you’ve had a great idea for a post as you were drifting off to sleep at night or while driving down the freeway only to have it elude you when you sat down at your keyboard. It’s a good idea to keep a notebook or small voice recorder with you at all times so you can record your ideas when they occur to you.
  • Have Fun
People read blogs for the information they provide but they subscribe to blogs with personality. By letting your personality show through in your posts you’ll build relationships with your readers. Be sure to ask your readers for feedback when you post. By making your blog a two-way conversation you can take some of the burden of content creation off of your shoulders and keep your readers engaged.
